There are musicians who were raised in the lap of music, guided by her beguiling touch from birth; aware of her sudden moods, her fancies, and able to twist them like a reed and make her laugh one moment, and weep the next. Her magic taints their blood, and their hearts are marked by this dagger of golden sound. Their spirits, too, are unapologetic when it comes to music's gifts- strong eyes always glowing with the knowledge music inherently lent then privy to, without shame, and without pity.
To be born with music already in your blood is rare indeed. These lucky few find themselves strumming strings on a guitar with unheeded fingers, caressing the black and white keys of the piano without a second thought, and at the same time, creating something truly worth listening to. Not to say these musicians don't go through their share of troubles, of difficulty, of nights spent hunched over an instrument, blank paper and music bars on the coffee table, of mornings full of celebrating the 2 lines finished. Because they do, perhaps with even more frustration, as they will never settle for anything less then perfection.
I'm sure you know many musicians who fit this sort of description. Let me introduce you to one more you may not be familiar with, but one who's very aura exudes the same sort of fire, the same sort of passion. One who shares the same sort of blood-- blood brimming with music.
Reza Khan is not a household name. And he isn't trying to make it one. All he is doing is sharing his music, music which is full bodied in spirit, and warmth, and, most importantly, love. Take a minute to listen and feel what he's sharing. I guarantee you'll be touched.
His story is a paradoxal combination of simplicity and wonder. Born February 10th, 1964, in the captial city of Bangladesh, Reza came into a world already beginning to fight for it's independence. His country's war for freedom left an early impression of blood and strife on his youth, something which carried on into his adult years, and into his music as well. With 5 other siblings, as well as a pair of very warm parents, and too many relations to count, he never claimed to be without support. He was able to fuel his interest in music, born with him, beause of this support, and in between school and being a good son, he found the time to jump start his music career. In 1982, Reza composed his very first collection of music which he recorded in Dawn Studios in Dhanmondi. And that was the start of his success with music in Bangladesh. In 1983 he composed, collaborated, and recorded his very first complete English album in Dawn studio, called "The Language of Love". This was followed by a series of Bengali songs he produced in 1984 inspired by Western music. That same year Reza also started working with the band Short Circuit. He later, in 1985, started his own band, called Yours Sincerely, and played at a Redcross fundraising concert for hurricane victims in the British Council Auditorium in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Though his music career was only in it's first bloom, in 1986 Reza left for the US to persue a career in computer engineering. He graduated from Queens College in New York City in 1990 with a degree and a job at the UN. In the meantime, he continued to work on his music, which was compiled into an album titled "Member's Only" and sold over 75,000 copies in Bangladesh in 1991. He continued working in the UN while his music gained so much popularity back in Bangladesh. 3 years later he stared a yoga school in Manhattan and met the woman who would one day become his life partner, Valentina Resta.
The next couple of years would shape up to be the most exciting of his life. In 1995 Reza traveled all across South America, visiting everything from the Amazon to the rain forests in Venezuela. In 1996 he was sent on several UN missions to Africa, and ended up joining the UN Peace Core in Angola. Africa left such a deep impression on him that he moved his life there, settling in South Africa and joining the private sector there to become a management consultant. 2 years later he married Valentina in Pretoria, and boasts of an elephant back safari in Zimbabwe for their honeymoon.
In the year 2000 Reza received his most precious gift of all, something he would trade all his magical music for. His daughter, Sharmeen, came into the world, with big dark eyes full of charm, and a heart full of song. With her and Valentina in tow, Reza moved back to New York in 2001 to be reunited with the rest of his family now living in New York. All the while, he has continued making music, music which had been moving in tandem to his life, music which evolved just as he had.
Reza always claimed it was geo cultural experiences which affected his music the most. His musical influences include the Beatles, Ravi Shankar, The Eagles, and America, as well as lots of jazz and new age. His earliest music was influenced heavily by classic and country rock, which slowly began to incorporate elements of jazz and world music in the 90's. Now, it has become something of a hybrid, encompassing all genres.
Born into a musical family 1964 in Bangladesh Reza grew up with music all around. As his father was a professional musician. Reza's first recording gained the interest of many local musicans and due to the great response and support Reza set out to record his first complete album
"Yours Sincerely ".
