"Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents."
- Ludwig van Beethoven
I went to Johannesburg, South Africa in June, 97 to meet Reza Khan, whose album “Members Only” had opened up my mind to a whole new disparate sound. I knew I had to meet the man behind the music. With a piano style distinct in quality and unique in tone, it was as if his musical scale was expressing his truth at that moment in time. My experience in South Africa was unforgettable.
My own training began with classical guitar in Amsterdam at age 13. In 94 came Dhruba, the first band that I was a part of and where I honed my skills as a bass player. After moving to New York to pursue studies, I joined the rock band Zefyr, who had already prominently established themselves in the local circuit. The following ten years were filled with the sounds, grooves, rhythms and textures only to be found in New York.
Now in Toronto, the musical landscape has changed but the fundamental importance of music, in all its forms, remains.
I look forward to being part of this project and hope that I can be a part of Reza’s vision.
